Having possession over your figure and gender is incredibly tricky when you are a girl or woman. When you're a large Black person, you're made to feel like your body is an pain and your masculinity is minimal. It's even harder when you're Black.
The prominent, whitened nationalist, discriminatory society in the United States has long insisted that Black children's and women' physiques and sexualities don't relate to us. Since property enslavement, Black bodies-and specially Black female's bodies-have been seen as a commodities to be used and manipulated for the benefit of people.
In the absence of cultural models or language that affirmed the possibility of sexual pleasure and autonomy for Black women, we both found that our sexual awakenings were informed by pop culture-whether through soft porn on Cinemax ( better known as "Skin-e-max" ), Showtime After Dark, or HBO's Real Sex. One particularly powerful event of True Intercourse featured a Dominatrix. She was hot, furious, and in command. She was well-compensated for the job she was doing. She was strong. Commanding. And, like most representations of specialized Rulers then and still, she was light.
In other words, at the same time that we learned about the choices of love-making outside of societally accepted conventions, we learned that those routines were, with several exclusions, for bright persons. Immediately, we know that the manner we practice BDSM is intrinsically connected to our elections and serious love for Black freedom and autonomy. It took even longer to recognize that some of those desires were clear practices and tenets of a specific sexual power play known as BDSM ( bondage, dominance, discipline, submission, sadism, and masochism ). Consequently even as we both began to explore our unique genital liberty, it would be some times before either of us understood that what we were into was, in reality, bend.
